Preparing for your child to start school and be ‘school ready’ begins earlier than you might think. Their development in their first 4-5 years of life are the building blocks for them being ready to learn once at school. The main way young children learn is through you and these helpful resources provide information on how you can best support your child’s learning and development.

Moving from primary to secondary is an exciting time for many young people and their parents but it can also be a time when you feel uncertain or nervous about what secondary school will be like and the next stages of becoming more independent like getting the bus to school.

If you are worried and feel it would be helpful to talk to someone about this you can speak to your child’s current or new class teacher and/or your school nurse.

Friendships are important to positive social, cognitive and emotional development and are associated with an increased sense of wellbeing. It is common for parents to worry that their child may not make friends at school.

We have found some helpful resources for you and your child at different ages, stages and with different circumstances.

Bullying is abuse and can have a significant impact on your child’s emotional health and wellbeing. It may affect their school attendance, behaviour and performance at school. 

If you are concerned your child may being bullied you can speak to their class teacher and/or school nurse.
